1The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place. 3And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him.

• What warning or counsel have you been tempted to dismiss, like Gedaliah dismissed Johanan, and what protection or preparation would be wise?
• When you feel passed over, what does it look like to trust God to exalt in His time instead of taking matters into your own hands (Psalms 75:6–7)?
• In what ways do you tend to treat God like a spare tire rather than the steering wheel, and what would it change to surrender what you’ve been trying to control?
• What is one area where you need to stop ‘playing around with sin’ and, by the Spirit, put to death what is of the flesh (Romans 8:13)?

Pause before you move: choose one decision or tense relationship and wait long enough to seek God, ask for wise counsel, and refuse a knee-jerk response. Watch for where you are trying to control outcomes in your own strength and surrender that to the Lord.
